King's Cottage garden

The Square
Costock
England

John King lived at the cottage until his death in 1802, and is now buried in the garden there. This is a view of the garden, showing his gravestone, of Swithland slate. John King was the parish clerk but fell out with the vicar and the Anglican church, and became a Baptist. On his deathbed he insisted that he was not to be interred in the village churchyard, but at the same time did not want to be buried outside his native Costock. The Baptist Church he frequented was in East Leake, so outside his native village. On completion of the dictation of his epitaph, his expressed wish was to be interred in his own garden. Although his garden was not hallowed ground, his wishes were complied with. Also pictured are the stables and coach-house and the water pump (left).
