St Peter's in the Rushes was Rempstone's church up the 1770s. Due to its remoteness it was decided to build a church 0.75 miles nearer the village. St Peter in the Rushes was dismantled, and the materials used to build the new All Saints' church in 1773, which was opened by the Archbishop of York. St Peter in the Rushes, stood approximately half a mile (1 km) north-east of the present village near the Sheepwash Brook next to a moated Manor House now a fishing lake, a Holy spring is also at this location. An archaeological dig in 1960-1962, revealed the foundations of a 12th century tower with square buttresses. Earthworks near the brook indicate the original site of the village. (Additional information very kindly supplied by John Beniston).
