Nottingham City Transport Limited, as it is known in 2002, has its origins in the Nottingham and District Tramways Order of 1877, which authorised commercial operation of tramways worked by animal power in Nottingham and the suburbs of Lenton, West Bridgford, Basford and Radford. In 1897, Nottingham Corporation took over the tramways and the Nottingham Improvements Act of that year gave authority for the use of mechanical traction.
