Looking SE. This is a Home Ales Brewery Pub. On the right is Cranmer House (the rear), see NCCS000173 and ..4. The Family of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556), and he himself, lived in Aslockton. As a boy he was reported to have sat on Cranmer's Mound (a well preserved Motte in the village) and listened to the Whatton Bells. He left the village at 14 to attend Jesus College, Cambridge, and rose to fame as the archbishop in 1533, having found favour with Henry VIII by supporting the King's divorce from Catherine of Aragon. He fell from grace after the death of the subsequent King (Edward VI), when he had reluctantly agreed to support the claims to the throne of Lady Jane Grey. He was tried for Heresy and burnt at the stake in 1556. His lasting memorial was his great involvment in the writing of The Book Of Common Prayer. His father's tomb is at nearby Whatton Church.
