View south from no. 1 platform. Retford South signal box was located just out of the picture to the right. Shown is an East Coast Main Line (ECML) freight train on Retford Crossing (at the time this was described as a diamond crossing, because of the shape formed by the intersection of the tracks). In the foreground was the eastern connection between the ECML and ex-G.C.R. Lincoln to Worksop line (The line the engine is running across); these formed a junction further east. The engine, a British Railways Standard class '9F' was, according to its Headcode, hauling a class 8 freight (these ran at a lower average speed than an express freight). No. 92168 was 'shedded' (i.e. allocated) at Doncaster depot. The 9F class were designed for heavy-freight haulage. Taken early October 1964.
