The new footbridge was built to allow a safe clearance for the new electric wires on the main London - Edinburgh railway. The original bridge known as 'The Iron Bridge' was of cast and lattice iron construction and was made at a foundry in Doncaster whose name could still be seen faintly under the paint on the old bridge supports.
