Woodthorpe House, Mansfield Road, Sherwood, Nottingham, pre 1939

Mansfield Road
Nottingham, Sherwood
England

This photo is pre-1939, as it does not show the canteen which was added during WWII when it was requisitioned by the Army. Now used as Sherwood Community Centre. This photo of Woodthorpe House is almost identical to the one (presumed to have been taken same day) which appeared in a Nottingham newspaper in 1939 announcing that the building was to be demolished for housing. However, the building was requisitioned by the War Office in 1940 and used as a base for 172 (M)HAA and 161 (M)HAA regiments from August 1942 to October 1944. In 1949, Sherwood Community Association took over the building, and it is still Sherwood Community Centre. Woodthorpe House is Grade II listed and is early 19th century (if not earlier in places).
