An early view of The Square, showing the old Town Hall building and a gas light described by A Jackson (1971) in 'A history of Retford' as "An elegant doric cast-iron pillar and pedestal, 22 feet high, holding five gas lamps". This gas lamp was installed after 1831 and exploded in 1874. Information kindly supplied by Megan Doole (Temporary Conservation Officer, Bassetlaw District Council).
