Archaeological Dig

Rampton
Rampton
England

An Archaeological dig was carried out by Mr M W Ponsford and local helpers when an Iron Age-Romano-British settlement was discovered about 2 miles down an old farm lane, away from Rampton Church, near to Cottam Power Station. The settlement was first inhabited by Iron Age people, identified by shards of turned pottery. These were then superseded by Roman cultured inhabitants, indicated by fragments of brooches, lead weights and later pottery. The trench seen here contains what looks like a small circular structure (An Iron Age hut ?), indicated by the post holes, and a centre post. Another find at the dig was the skeleton of what looks like a sheep. See NCCN000601.
