On Friday 1 November 1963, almost 40 years after he became a member of Retford Town Council, Alderman Alfred Wilson was admitted to the Honorary Freedom of the Borough at the Town Hall. The event was reported in the Retford Times Friday Nov 8, 1963. The presentation was made by the Mayor of Retford (Councillor G M Bruce Pearson). Also present were: Sir Stuart Goodwin, Lord High Steward of the Borough, Lady Goodwin, the Deputy Mayoress, Mrs B R Pattison, The Rt. Hon. F J Bellinger MP for Bassetlaw, The Mayors of Batley, Newark, Mansfield and Worksop, The Town Clerks and Chairman of Retford Rural Council, Coun. M Marsden. Other guests included Mrs Alfred Wilson and the couple's 2 sons Mr R Wilson and Mr Desmond Wilson. The casket presented is of solid silver, height 4 inches, length 9.5 inches, width 4 inches. The coat of arms of the borough is on one side of the casket in relief and engraved. The inscription on the top reads: Presented to Alderman Alfred Wilson by the Corporation of East Retford on his admission to the Honorary Freedom of the Borough 1st November 1963.
