This unidentified young man was the brother-in-law of the Mansfield artist, photographer and antiquarian A S Buxton, being the brother of his wife Edith (nee Stendall). His dark complexion is accounted for by the way the photographic emulsion recorded colour - he is clearly sun-tanned and had probably just returned from South Africa where his father had served in the Boer War.
