There were other libraries in Newark before the Gilstrap Free Library but they were subscription libraries to which you had to pay to be a member. One of them, known as The Stock Library is pictured here (immediately to the right of the black-and-white building). Its seen here as Wilkinsons furniture shop, but today it has been taken over by a pub chain who have named it The Sir John Arderne. John Arderne (not a Sir) was a noted Medieval surgeon who is believed to have been born (or resided) in Newark. He is remembered in the annals of medical history as the first English surgeon and for his early successful method of treating haemorrhoids. Why not Google him?
