To the east of the Moot Hall lay Mr. Walter Smith's grocery shop, seen here in c 1890. Mr. Smith is standing in the doorway, whilst another well remembered shop, Pipers Penny Bazaar, may be seen adjacent. Mr. Walter Smith, grocer and tea dealer, outside his shop at 19 Market Place, c 1890. Smiths are listed in Newark's trade directories from the mid 1860s, to c 1920, when the premises were acquired by G. H. Porter's and run in tandem with their celebrated Bridge Street store. Here, Pipers Penny Bazaar occupies the adjacent frontage. (P. Speirs)
