The Plaque referring to the history of Bellar Gate Rest Garden can be seen on the wall in the distance. It states: 'This Rest Garden is on the site of an Ancient Burial Ground associated with St Mary's Church, and was granted to the Parish for the sum of ten shillings by Evelyn, Duke of Kingstone on 17 March 1742. In the 1830s it was used to accommodate the victims of a Cholera epidemic which struck Nottingham, and was finally closed in 1897. The City Council now maintain the rest garden under a perpetual licence from the Chancellor of Southwell Diocese.'
