Shakespeare Street was once known as Cross Lane and was widened in 1852. The building with the tower was once the 'Children's Free Library'. Engelo Terrace next door had listed among its tenants an artist, surgeons and a music teacher. It is now occupied by 'The Workers Education Association' (East Midland District).
