We have very good reason to believe that there was a church here prior to II76, but there are no written records available to confirm this. The church mainly dates to the mid 14th century, but was restored in 1868-9 by Scott. The north wall is the oldest part of the church. When the church was rebuilt in the 14th century this was the only part of the church which was retained. The upper part of the tower was added in I630. The porch was built in I930 with money given by Lady Robinson in memory of her husband Sir John Robinson who had died the previous year. This means that immediately prior to I930 there would have been no porch and the south door opened directly to the outside, with all the implications of draughts. It would have been unusual if there had not been a porch at an earlier date which, if in a state of disrepair, would be easier to pull down than repair. (information from www.stmarysarnold.org.uk)
