The Newark contingent of the National Defence Corps Parade on the steps of the Corn Exchange at Castle Gate at the very beginning of WW2 in September 1939. The Newark Advertiser caption for this photograph (published 30th August 1939) reads: Some of the first men to be called up are members of the National Defence Corps, a unit which is comprised of Ex-Servicemen. These men are billeted at the Corn Exchange, and are doing guards at vulnerable points. Photo by Hunt and Co. Third up steps from left is George William Abbott (1896-1984).
