Miss Robinson's school, a private establishment, was located at Chestnut House, opposite the Cross Keys public house. Here a mixed group of pupils pose for the camera in front of the school. Many are holding sticks with what look like rafia sheaves at the top - can anyone comment on what these might be? The school was still being run by Miss Robinson until at least the late 1920s. Even in the Edwardian period there had been a school on this site for a long time, although its history may not have been continuous. As Chestnut House Academy it is first recorded in 1844 and by the 1870s included a gymnasium, a lecture and recreation room, hot and cold water baths, a playground and extensive gardens. The 1871 Census shows that there were 38 pupils (all boys) aged between 11 and 15 years from all over Nottinghamshire, plus Lincolnshire, Hull and London. By 1986 the site of Chestnut House was occupied by a row of shops.
