River Trent (off Castlegate)
Newark on Trent
England

Designed to replace the 100 year old Gilstrap Library in the grounds of Newark castle, this new library was to be built immediately to the south of the castle (seen here on the left) and adjacent to the River Trent. Although designs were submitted and this model built for public consultation, the new library was not built on this site, but eventually constructed on the other side of Newark in Beaumond Gardens in 1988. The original design concept for this unsuccessful plan was as follows:- The design of the Library provides a building which is attractive in its own right whilst relating sympathetically to the form and scale of neighbouring premises. The pitched roof is to be covered with pantiles and the walls are to be of brickwork, both chosen to match those existing on nearby buildings. The Library is to be located near to the edge of the river with the lower floor set back to allow the riverside walk to continue. The upper floor extends over the footpath giving shelter and providing a new point of interest along this route. Elevations towards the river will be all window to take advantage from within of the fine views along and across the water. Additionally, passer-bys will be able to see into this public building, an aspect that will be particularly dramatic during winter evenings when the lights are on. From Castlegate, a new footpath will lead to a paved entrance area. The over-hanging roof to the entrance porch will offer shelter for bicycles and prams. The main library space is planned as one volume on two floors connected by a feature staircase and a lift. This arrangement will give ease of access to all parts of the accommodation by all users and allows flexibility in the layout of the various parts of the Library. Due to the slope of the land, the entrance is at the upper level and provides immediate access to the issue and return desks and an information area. The accommodation also includes a small coffee bar, public toilets and facilities for the staff. The arrangements take into account the needs of the handicapped and the building is designed for minimum use of energy. A few young trees will need to be removed to enable construction to take place but the garden area surrounding the Library is to be landscaped with new trees and shrubs provided. PROPOSED MATERIALS BRICKWORK - TO MATCH NEIGHBOURING BUILDINGS. ROOF - PANTILES TO MATCH NEIGHBOURING BUILDINGS. PATENT GLAZING WINDOWS - BRONZE COLOUR ALUMINIUM FRAMES. BOX GUTTERS AND PANELS BELOW RIVERSIDE WINDOWS - STONE COLOURED PREFORMED SECTIONS.
