Illustration taken from "Old Nottinghamshire" (second series published in 1884) edited by J. Potter Briscoe. DR. Erasmus Darwin, physician, philosopher, poet and philanthropist, was born at Elston Hall, near Newark, December 12, 1731, an illustration of which house we give on the next page as an "Old Nottinghamshire" house. It is not our intention to give a biographical sketch of this Nottinghamshire worthy, for that has recently been done in an admirable manner in 'Lives of Nottinghamshire Worthies', by our contributor, Mr. Cornelius Brown, F.R.S.L. To those of our readers who would learn more of the grandfather of the great naturalist, Charles Darwin, we would refer them to an account of the life of Erasmus Darwin by his grandson, which is prefixed to an essay by Ernst Krause, and published by Mr. Murray, who has obligingly contributed the illustrations of his birthplace and his last home. Darwin died at Breadsall Priory, near Derby (where he had resided about two years,) April 10, 1802, and was interred in Breadsall Church, where the following inscription is to be read on the monument erected to his memory:- ERASMUS DARWIN, M.D., F.R.S. Born at Elston, near Newark, 12th Dec. 1731. Died at the Priory, near Derby, l0th April, 1802. Of the rare union of Talents which so eminently distinguished him as a Physician, a Poet and Philosopher His writings remain a public and unfading testimony. His Widow has erected this monument in memory of the zealous benevolence of his disposition, the active humanity of his conduct, and the many private virtues which adorned his character.
